Basketball Club

 

Do you like to play basketball?  If you do, then join Intramural Basketball with Mr. Grimes.  You will learn the fundamentals of the game, compete in some fun competitions, and play 4 on 4 games against other teams within the club.

Book Club - Rebecca Caudill Book Club

 

Do you love to read?  Do you enjoy discussing books with other people who love to read? This is the club for you. Open to 5th and 6th graders who want to read and discuss this year’s state-wide reading list, the Rebecca Caudill books.  During the first meeting, club members will vote for their favorite Caudills, which will determine what we will read together for the rest of the year.  Note: This eight-session club will meet the second Monday of each month, beginning on October 19th (which is technically the 3rd Monday of October). Students are responsible for obtaining their own copy of the books. Snacks will be provided.

Bowling Club

 

STRIKES . . . SPARE . . . GUTTERS!!!   The fee covers shoes and games bowled.  Every student is responsible for getting to the Wilmette Bowling Center and home after bowling.

Bridge Club

 

Duplicate bridge is now being played at the Olympic games in the new Mind Games category.  Bill Gates and Warren Buffet believe so much in the value of their favorite pastime that they have donated one million dollars for an initiative to get programs going for kids across the U.S.  Bridge improves memory and logic and teaches teamwork; but the reason kids say they love it?  It’s fun!  The Highcrest Bridge club will be recognized by the American Contract Bridge League.  Visit www.youth4bridge.org to get a sense of what is happening in other U.S. locations.  Lead teachers, Jaqueline Rapp and Elizabeth Staehlin, live in Wilmette.  Both have taught in the area and are Bridge Life Masters.

Broadcasting Club

 

LIGHTS . . . CAMERA . . . ACTION!!!  Highcrest has its own TV Station and we need you to help run it. You will write, produce, and edit parts of the weekly WHMS newscast that airs in all classrooms at the beginning of each week.  As you take on the job as a news producer, writer, reporter, cameraperson, teleprompter controller, floor manager, video or sound editor or a number of other jobs, you will create a newscast the whole school will enjoy!!

Chess Club

 

Shiva Maharaj will be the coach/instructor for this program.  Shiva has been working with the McKenzie school for the past several years and helped them win state titles in 2006, 2007, and 2008.  He is the trainer of the twice Wisconsin State Champion (1997 and 1998) and also coached the North American Expert Champion--Las Vegas 2003.  Currently he coaches in both Wisconsin and Illinois schools.  Shiva has been training chess students for over 15 years.  Beginners to advance players are welcome.  The program will be FRIDAY AFTERNOONS. This is a wonderful day of the week for Chess Club, since students can prepare for any weekend chess tournament or activity.  As we move towards an informational-driven society, the skills your students learn through the game of chess will serve them well in everything they strive to accomplish. Chess sets will be provided (no need for the student to bring).

Clay Arts and Crafts Club

 

This is a fun and creative club all about clay!  You will learn special tricks for making unique clay artwork.  You will make several clay projects such as bowls, mugs, and animals.  We will fire and glaze our projects in the kiln creating the perfect artwork for gifts or personal keepsakes.  A snack will be provided so please let me know of any food allergies.

Cooking Club

 

Jr. chefs wanted for this club.  This club will provide you with hands-on experience in learning how to follow a recipe, cook an item, and take it home to share.  You will make a different item each week.  It will be yummy! (Please note that food prep will include dairy, egg, and flour products. In addition, the recipes made in this session of the club will be exactly the same as those made in the Winter session.)

German Club

 

Wie geht’s?  What does that mean?  Join the German club and find out! Watch TV shows and movies in German!  Play fun board games in German!  Eat German, Austrian, and Swiss food!  Do other fun things that will make you want to yell “Ausgezeichnet!”.  PLEASE NOTE: This club does not start at 3:50 pm, but rather 4:05 pm.  It also ends at 5:00 pm (not 4:50 pm).

That’s right, 5th and 6th Graders, Kitchen Science TWO has all new, totally cool activities and experiments.  We will learn about why popcorn pops, why soda makes you silly, how to blow bubbles like you never have before, how to make raisins dance, make balloons blow themselves up, how to make your own pasta, and more!  You don’t have to have taken Kitchen Science 1 to join us as we explore science experiments that use simple kitchen ingredients, and learn how to explain the chemical reactions that happen while you cook!  Come join in the fun!

Knitting Club

 

Come learn to create handmade knits for yourself and others while socializing with others.  We will begin with knitting a scarf and then choose a cool project to complete.  This club is great for beginners learning to knit a scarf or more advanced knitters learning to knit hats or new stitches All knitting supplies are included in the costs.

Sculpture - Clay Creations Clubs

 

Come and create miniatures with polymer clay.  You will make anything from animals to people, and from scenery to cartoon characters.  The clay will be baked so it will become hard.  This class is fun for girls and boys.  Snacks will be served so please inform me of any food allergies.

Yoga Club
Did you know that practicing yoga is a fun way to help your body, to sleep better, and to focus on your homework?!  Students who join “young yogis” will learn to stretch their bodies and calm their minds in this fun, energy filled class.  We will learn basic breathing techniques, the sun salutation series and many fun and beneficial poses.  Once students make a variety of poses, they will design their own short, daily routine.  Please wear movable clothes (shorts or pants - no jeans!)  Bring or a yoga mat or beach towel and a water bottle to class.
