Junior Great Books
Junior Great Books is a longstanding literature program and is a great way for your child to connect with classmates while expanding the joy of reading.
The JGB program begins in January. The program takes place one day a week, during your child’s lunch and recess periods, for eight weeks. Instead of eating in the cafeteria and going to recess, your student brings a sack lunch, meets in a classroom with his or her group and discusses short stories selected from the “Junior Great Books Anthology.” Stories are by a variety of authors and include classics and folktales from Western and other cultures. Students are expected to have read the story at home and come prepared with some thoughts to share!
Discussion groups are facilitated by two trained parent volunteer leaders (the same leaders each week) who use a “shared inquiry” method to encourage students to draw insights and connections. Discussion leaders are also supported by access to an online support center to share resources and teaching ideas. Class sessions are highly interactive and are designed to make story interpretation fun! Friend requests will be accommodated if possible.
